   Barstow USMC Base

Picture

Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow is a United States Marine Corps supply and maintenance installation located in the Mojave Desert east of Barstow, in San Bernardino County, Southern California.

Its mission is to rebuild and repair ground-combat and combat-support equipment and to support installations on the West Coast of the United States. Today, one of MCLB Barstow’s most important facilities is the Marine Corps Logistics Bases’ Maintenance Center. The only other facility of this kind is located at MCLB Barstow’s sister installation, Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany.

PFOS/PFOA was recently found in the drinking water at 103 ppt., many times over the California Notification Level.

The Marine Corps reports, “Addressed current exposure. Bottled water to one resident at a rental property. Renter moved out; property currently vacant. Continue monitoring."

In addition to the drinking water, Barstow has also disclosed that the groundwater is contaminated with PFOS/PFOA. 37 wells were tested and 16 were contaminated above Lifetime Health Advisory Levels. The Marine Corps base reports it has "Completed off-based DW sampling; providing alternative water supply."

Barstow Marine Corps Logistics Base EPA Superfund Site

The Barstow Marine Corps Logistics Base site covers 5,687 acres east of Barstow, California. The site consists of three areas: the Nebo area, the Yermo area and the Rifle Range. The base has two major functions: providing equipment maintenance, repair, overhaul and rebuilding, and receiving, storing, maintaining, issuing and shipping materials. Consequently, most of the wastes historically generated by the base have been vehicle-related and war surplus. Investigations by the Marine Corps have found 38 areas of contamination on the base. Site investigations and cleanup are ongoing.

Daggett Community Services District
Serves: 795 Data available: 2012—2017
Source: Groundwater Contaminants Detected
3 EXCEED EWG HEALTH GUIDELINES 8 Total Contaminants
EWG's drinking water quality report shows results of tests conducted by the water utility and provided to the Environmental Working Group by the California State Water Resources Control Board, as well as information from the U.S. EPA Enforcement and Compliance History database (ECHO). For the latest quarter assessed by the U.S. EPA (January 2019 - March 2019), tap water provided by this water utility was in compliance with federal health-based drinking water standards.

Legal does not necessarily equal safe. Getting a passing grade from the federal government does not mean the water meets the latest health guidelines.
Legal limits for contaminants in tap water have not been updated in almost 20 years.
The best way to ensure clean tap water is to keep pollution out of source water in the first place
