      Camp Pendleton

Picture
Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton  is one of the largest Marine Corps bases in the US. It is in San Diego County, and bordered by Oceanside to the south, Cleveland National Forest, San Clemente, and Orange County to the north, Riverside County to the northeast, and Fallbrook to the east.

PFOS/PFOA was found in the drinking water at  820.8 ppt, many times the California notification level. (See below for well water test results.)

The affected reservoir was drained and replaced with water from another source. From the Marine Corps: "Resampling confirmed levels below the Health Advisories Level in the current water supply and levels slightly above the Health Advisories Level in the well taken out of service. Installation will continue to monitor the system."

See below for several hundred thousand pages documenting contamination at Camp Pendleton dating back to 1991. The most up to date records on water contamination are not available without filing a lengthy and costly Freedom of Information Act Request, (FOIA).   Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base

Picture
Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base Superfund Site

The Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base site covers 125,000 acres in San Diego County, California. The base provides housing, training, logistical and administrative support for the Fleet Marine Force units. Disposal practices have contaminated the groundwater and soil. In an initial investigation, the Marine Corps found nine areas of contamination. Waste generation operations include maintenance and repair of vehicles (trucks, tanks and aircraft), landfill operations, waste disposal areas such as scrap yards, and firefighting drill areas. The base contains wetlands, streams and rivers that feed into the Pacific Ocean. This land is the only remaining undeveloped area between Los Angeles and San Diego. The site’s long-term cleanup is ongoing.

Risks and pathways addressed by the cleanup include health risks from people ingesting or touching contaminants in soil and groundwater. Though groundwater provides drinking water to the entire installation, the current drinking water supply is within drinking water standards.

Well water found to contain 820.8 ppt of PFAS
PictureCarbon filter systems can treat PFAS-contaminated water.
The Camp Pendleton community water system serves 39,400 people. In 2017, drinking water wells on the base were shown to contained 820.8 ppt of these carcinogens: PFBS, PFHpA, PFHxA, PFHxS, PFNA, PFOA, PFOS.

This total reflects what was in the water when it was tested, not necessarily what is coming out of taps today. The water in the ground is poisonous so it is imperative for water officials to filter out the carcinogens while state regulators closely monitor the chemical content of tap water.

Water systems have three options: they can take contaminated wells offline, they can blend water from contaminated wells with cleaner sources, or they can  install expensive water treatment filters to reduce PFAS levels.

EWG HEALTH GUIDELINES

32 Total Contaminants

EWG's drinking water quality report shows results of tests conducted by the water utility and provided to the Environmental Working Group by the California State Water Resources Control Board, as well as information from the U.S. EPA Enforcement and Compliance History database (ECHO). For the latest quarter assessed by the U.S. EPA (January 2019 - March 2019), tap water provided by this water utility was in compliance with federal health-based drinking water standards.

Legal does not necessarily equal safe. Getting a passing grade from the federal government does not mean the water meets the latest health guidelines.
Legal limits for contaminants in tap water have not been updated in almost 20 years.
The best way to ensure clean tap water is to keep pollution out of source water in the first place.

Picture
The California Water Board tested 13 wells at Camp Pendleton and found them all to be contaminated with PFAS during testing in 2019.  The average well was shown to have 48 ppt of PFAS.  Well 2301 had 68 ppt of PFOS/PFOA, 86.4 ppt of "non-PFOS/PFOA  PFAS" for a total PFAS of 154.44 See: First round of PFAS sampling for CA Public Water Systems - April 1st to June 30th 2019
