Moffett Field - Former Naval Air Station

The former naval air station is now owned and operated by the NASA Ames Research Center. Tenant military activities include the 129th Rescue Wing of the California Air National Guard, operating the HC-130J Combat King II and HH-60G Pave Hawk aircraft.  Moffett Federal Airfield is a joint civil-military airport located in an unincorporated part of Santa Clara County between northern Mountain View and northern Sunnyvale, California. On November 10, 2014, NASA Ames announced that it would be leasing 1000 acres of the airfield property to Google for 60 years.

Moffett Field - Former Naval Air Station

Moffett Field Naval Air Station

The 1,500-acre Naval Air Station Moffett Field site is located in Moffett Field, California. Military activities at the site contaminated groundwater, soil and wetlands with volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and pesticides. Cleanup activities are in various phases of completion. Operation and maintenance activities and monitoring are also ongoing.

Risks and pathways addressed by the cleanup include health risks from people ingesting or touching contaminants in soil and groundwater.

Moffett Field is identified as a DOD installation with known or suspected releases of PFOS/PFOA, according to a DOD Report to Congress on Aqueous Film-Forming Foam - Nov. 3, 2017.   No testing results were made public regarding the base, only that it is likely contaminated with the ”forever chemicals.”

Aqueous Film Forming Foam Report to Congress, October, 2017

Contaminants Detected 11 EXCEED EWG HEALTH GUIDELINES

23 Total Contaminants

EWG's drinking water quality report shows results of tests conducted by the water utility and provided to the Environmental Working Group by the California State Water Resources Control Board, as well as information from the U.S. EPA Enforcement and Compliance History database (ECHO). For the latest quarter assessed by the U.S. EPA (January 2019 - March 2019), tap water provided by this water utility was in compliance with federal health-based drinking water standards.

Legal does not necessarily equal safe. Getting a passing grade from the federal government does not mean the water meets the latest health guidelines.
Legal limits for contaminants in tap water have not been updated in almost 20 years.
The best way to ensure clean tap water is to keep pollution out of source water in the first place.
