             Sacramento Army Depot

Picture

The
Sacramento Army Depot was a 485-acre facility located within current city limits, 7 miles southeast of downtown Sacramento, California in
Sacramento County.

The base was activated in 1941. It served as a repair facility for electronic equipment, such as
night vision goggles, electronic circuit boards, and radium-dial instrumentation. The depot was deactivated after the findings of the 1988 Base Realignment and Closure Commission. The depot officially closed on March 3, 1995. On July 22, 1987, the depot was added to the National Priorities List as a Superfund site.

                                       Sacramento Army Depot

The 485-acre Sacramento Army Depot site, established in 1945, was a supply depot primarily responsible for the receipt, storage, issuance, maintenance and disposal of electronics supplies. Improper waste disposal practices at the site contaminated soils and groundwater with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and heavy metals. Cleanup, operation and maintenance activities, and monitoring are ongoing.

Risks and pathways addressed by the cleanup include health risks from people ingesting, inhaling or touching contaminants in soil, groundwater and groundwater vapors.

Sacramento Army Depot  is identified as a DOD installation with known or suspected releases of PFOS/PFOA, according to a DOD Report to Congress on Aqueous Film-Forming Foam - Nov. 3, 2017.

No testing results were made public regarding the base, only that it is likely contaminated with the ”forever chemicals.”

Contaminants Detected 8 EXCEED EWG HEALTH GUIDELINES

23 Total Contaminants

EWG's drinking water quality report shows results of tests conducted by the water utility and provided to the Environmental Working Group by the California State Water Resources Control Board, as well as information from the U.S. EPA Enforcement and Compliance History database (ECHO). For the latest quarter assessed by the U.S. EPA (January 2019 - March 2019), tap water provided by this water utility was in compliance with federal health-based drinking water standards.

Legal does not necessarily equal safe. Getting a passing grade from the federal government does not mean the water meets the latest health guidelines.
Legal limits for contaminants in tap water have not been updated in almost 20 years.
The best way to ensure clean tap water is to keep pollution out of source water in the first place.

Picture

The California Water Board tested Sacramento's water and found PFOS/PFOA contamination in Well 139, the only well tested.  The results are shown below:
PERFLUOROOCTANE SULFONIC ACID (PFOS) 14.67
PERFLUOROOCTANOIC ACID (PFOA) 1.37
