The Hidden Dangers of Artificial Turf: The Facts

Artificial turf fields are increasingly common, with an estimated 13,000 to 19,000+ synthetic fields in the United States as of 2020–2025, driven by a growth of 1,000–1,500 new installations annually. They are widely adopted by high schools, colleges, and municipal parks for sports like football and soccer. The real question is are these fields safe for soil, water, air, and the humans that play on them? Hinesburg, VT, is in the midst of considering such a field for its high school. This program features four presenters, discussing and detailing the dangers of artificial turf, Vermont laws around artificial turf, and what has happened in other parts of the state that have faced PFAS and micro-plastic contamination.
